Rays activate Nelson Cruz, who plays 1B for first time

Tampa Bay Rays veteran Nelson Cruz was activated from the COVID-19 injured list Tuesday and 104.251.210.101 found himself playing first base for the first time in his career.

With the Rays playing the Philadelphia Phillies in a National League ballpark, the designated hitter wasn’t being used so manager Kevin Cash inserted the 41-year-old Cruz in the lineup at first base and batting second.

“I’ll figure it out. I think, definitely, I’ll be nervous — butterflies the first inning,” Cruz told reporters prior to working at first base during pregame drills.

“And after that, I’m just going to enjoy myself. I’m going to have fun doing read what he said I love, playing the game.

“I guess just have to catch the ball. I know how to do that.”

Cruz, who reached the majors in 2005 as an outfielder with the Milwaukee Brewers, has spent the past 16 years in the American League and had not played in the field since 2018, when he played four games in right field for the Seattle Mariners. Of his 1,851 previous games for six teams, 970 had been in the outfield, and the rest as designated or pinch hitter.

He said his experience at first base is limited to playing the position in charity softball games.

While on the COVID-19 list, Cruz missed just one game — Sunday against the Chicago White Sox. He said he didn’t feel well and reportedly had a false positive test Sunday that was followed by two negative tests.

That cleared the way for Cruz to be activated just as the Rays were putting first baseman Ji-Man Choi (strained left hamstring) on the 10-day IL.

Cruz, a seven-time All-Star, is batting .198 with seven homers and 18 RBIs in 24 games since joining Tampa Bay. He began the season with the Minnesota Twins and hit .294 with 19 homers and 50 RBIs in 85 games before being traded to the Rays.

World’s deepest swimming pool hides vast sunken city 200 feet underwater

Thought was fancy? Jump into , a new indoor diving facility that’s 60 meters (197 feet) deep and filled with as much water as six Olympic-size swimming pools.

The diving pool — named deepest swimming pool for diving — opened to the public at the end of July. “Diving pool” doesn’t really do this wild place justice, however. Think of it as a massive underwater world full of subaquatic attractions.

Chief among them is an area made to resemble an abandoned sunken city, bchwiki.org complete with decaying buildings, graffiti-covered walls, fully furnished rooms and a sunken car. The 14 million liters of fresh water throughout the giant pool stays at a comfy 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) — no wetsuits required.

The grovelling phone call NRL bad boy made after toilet tryst

NRL star Adam Elliott could be spared the sack after making an emotional phone call to a highly influential figure at his club following his toilet tryst with a female footballer.

Elliott’s career hangs on a knife edge after Sunday’s incident on the , where he was asked to leave a restaurant soon after he was busted with Broncos NRLW player and dual international Millie Boyle in the men’s bathroom.

Pub baron Arthur Laundy, the major sponsor of Elliott’s Canterbury Bulldogs team through Laundy Hotels, is keen to keep the star at the club – provided he gives up entirely.

‘Adam called me and he was so down, he knew he’d done the wrong thing,’ Laundy told the

‘He needs to give the grog away. You only need to look at what’s happened on each of the occasions [he is intoxicated]. He’s got that gene in him that doesn’t help when you’re drinking.’

Canterbury major sponsor Arthur Laundy (pictured) wants Adam Elliott to stay at the club – provided he swears off alcohol

The Bulldogs board will make their decision on Elliott’s playing future once the NRL Integrity Unit complete their investigation into the matter, which could be as early as Wednesday.

Elliott has already been stood down for the club’s two remaining games against the Sea Eagles and Tigers.

Several board members reportedly find the back-rower’s off-field behaviour tiresome, and he could be cut loose.

Elliott, no stranger to off-field controversy, and Ms Boyle were busted in the men’s bathroom looking for a place to be ‘intimate’.

It has since emerged the pair were kissing in the bathroom because they did not want to be seen by wives and partners of other Bulldogs players at the restaurant.

The pair, who are both single, knew one another after both growing up near Bega on the south coast.

‘Look, all we did was have a kiss in the bathroom. It’s been taken way out of context. It’s a big kerfuffle about nothing,’ Ms Boyle told the

The Bulldogs are expected to come down hard on Elliott, pending the investigation from the NRL Integrity Unit into the incident.

Canterbury boss Phil Gould labelled Elliott’s conduct ‘grade five stupidity.’

‘Every time a player like Adam Elliott who has a list of priors puts himself out there to be criticised again, we drag up all of that,’ he told Channel 9’s 100% Footy on Monday night.

‘And that affects the club, it affects the brand, the sponsors, the fans, and particularly when the club is not performing very well it leaves a sour taste in everyone’s mouth who is associated with the club.

‘It has to be dealt with swiftly, Adam understands that and we will deal with it as swiftly as we can.’

Elliott, 26, was was asked to leave the Gold Coast venue on Sunday, with the club and the NRL becoming aware of the incident on Monday.

The integrity unit are also looking at whether any biosecurity rules were breached, including if the venue is classified as a restaurant rather than a pub.

Elliott played in the Bulldogs’ 22-16 loss to the Newcastle Knights on Saturday afternoon on the Gold Coast.

Earlier this year it emerged he was caught kissing the fiancée of former team-mate Michael Lichaa when he visited the couple’s home in Connells Point, in Sydney’s south, on February 13.

Lichaa had woken up at 4.30am to find Elliott, who was also in a long-term relationship, kissing his partner Kara Childerhouse on the back deck of their home.

Texts between Elliott and Lichaa later revealed Elliott’s regret over the incident.

‘I’ve got some serious deep issues with drinking and last night I made the biggest mistake of my life I’m so sorry I’ve hurt you and hurt [Elliot’s partner] Robyn.

‘The Bulldogs have conducted their own review and have decided that Adam will undertake professional help in regard to issues with alcohol, with the Bulldogs to provide full support including a strict monitoring process,’ the club said.

The development on Elliott comes as Canberra Raiders player Curtis Scott had his contract terminated, effective immediately, after the club’s board said on Monday it had considered statements and material presented at a hearing with the player on August 17.
